A low pressure system moves off to the east of the North Island tonight, then deepens as it heads towards the Chatham Islands on Friday, and away from Aotearoa on Saturday.
Following the departure of the low, New Zealand will lie in a southwesterly airstream during Fridayand Saturday,” MetService Meteorologist Andy Best said. “However, on Sunday an area of high pressure develops over the eastern Tasman Sea and the southwesterly flow gradually weakens during Sunday and Monday, bringing fine weather.”
Friday sees showers over the country gradually ease over Northland and Auckland by evening, then become isolated in the west of the North Island. Over the South Island, expect isolated afternoon showers over upper South Island ranges, while any showers over southern areas gradually clear by Friday afternoon.
A cold front moves onto the far south of the South Island late Friday, bringing a brief period of rain, but by Saturday morning the rain will have eased to showers which become confined to the coast. The remainder of the South Island is expected to be fine during Saturday and Sunday, apart from a few light showers about southern coasts and morning frosts for inland areas.
Almost all the North Island can expect fine weather on Saturday and Sunday, with overnight frosts in inland sheltered areas. Isolated showers over Northland and about the Wairarapa and Gisborne Coasts should clear early Saturday morning with just the chance of a shower early on Sunday about the Mahia Peninsula.
“The weather is looking ideal for Saturday evening’s rugby matches when the Black Ferns play the Walleroos and the All Blacks take on the Wallabies. There will be gentle breezes and a game time temperature of around 12 degrees, meaning at least a couple of layers of clothing, one of which should be a jacket as well as a scarf and a hat.”
