International Recognition for Research Output for GNS Science
GNS Science has been recognised for the high calibre of its research by being the top ranked corporate institution in
the world for its output of publications in earth and environmental sciences.
The 2018 Nature Index, published this week, ranks GNS Science eighth corporate institution in the world for its
publication output across all science disciplines.
The Index is a measure of high-quality research output by corporate, government, and academic organisations throughout
the world.
In one of four subject categories – earth and environmental sciences – GNS Science is the top corporate institution in
the world.
Ahead of GNS Science in the ‘all science disciplines’ category in the world Index were the likes of IBM Corporation, and
pharmaceutical companies Merck & Co, Pfizer Inc, and GlaxoSmithKline plc.
And in GNS Science’s wake were Equinor (formerly Statoil), NIWA, Schlumberger Ltd, Exxon Mobil Corporation, and Chevron
Corporation.
New Zealand-wide, GNS Science ranked first for earth and environmental sciences and fourth across all science
disciplines.
Senior scientist and geologist at GNS Science, Hamish Campbell, said the organisation prided itself on its success as
one of the world’s top science providers.
“We have attracted a steadily rising stream of revenue from research funding, as opposed to commercial revenue, over the
past 12 years. Success is breeding success,” Dr Campbell said.
“This outstanding achievement represents international endorsement of the Crown Research Institute model, unique to New
Zealand, which enables high-profile innovative collaborative scientific research.”
The ranking also reflected the growing prominence of many scientists employed by GNS Science and their ability to build
strong collaborations and lead complex projects that made a difference for New Zealand and internationally.
The Index tracks articles published in a group of selected science journals, chosen by an independent group of active
researchers. It provides a measure of publication productivity at the institutional and national level and, as such, is
one indicator of global high-quality research output.
