Two low pressure systems are lining up over the Tasman Sea, ready to cross over New Zealand from Friday meaning a wet Mother’s Day for many.

“The first low is set to cross the South Island on Friday. This low will affect the west of New Zealand first with heavy rain Watches and Warnings already issued for the West Coast and Mount Taranaki,” April Clark MetService Meteorologist warned. “These Severe Weather Warnings are a precursor to others which are likely to be issued for parts of the upper North Island this weekend,” Clark continued.

Though rain is expected to ease over the lower two thirds of the country on Saturday as the first low moves off to the east, the front over the north (and rain with it) is expected to linger into Saturday.

“For Mother’s Day on Sunday, expect wet weather for many regions, and a good excuse for a lie in for Mum.” Clark commented.

This continuing spell of unsettled weather is due to a second, larger area of low pressure pushing onto the country from the west on Sunday keeping most of the country in cloud or rain.
