Forecast for your Labour Weekend
MetService are forecasting a warm run up to the first long weekend of the season, with temperatures heading into the
high twenties in some places in the South Island today (Thursday) and Friday. After that things return to a changeable
westerly flow as the ridge retreats to the northern Tasman.
Those westerlies bring quite a bit of cloud and periods of rain or showers to southern and western regions at times over
the weekend. There will also be a noticeably cooler feel in the south, compared with the warmer temperatures at the
start of the weekend.
It’s not all bad news, as the east is looking mostly fine with blue skies at times. This is especially the case for
Hawkes Bay who have their anniversary day on Friday, giving them an extra-long long weekend.
“Thursday and Friday are two reasonable days for the Hawkes Bay A show, with just some morning cloud,” said MetService Forecaster Cameron Coutts, “and then it stays fine over the region
for the rest of the weekend. Lots of warm sunshine, so don’t forget your hat and sunscreen.”
Coutts continues, “Traditionally, Labour Weekend is also time for many gardeners to plant out frost tender plants such
as tomatoes and peppers. Those westerly winds will keep any late frosts at bay, although plants may need some support
such as staking.”
