2nuicode Students Experiment with Power
A group of budding young scientists from Te Runanga O Ngati Ruanui Trust’s innovative 2Nuicode have been shaping the
future of energy creation.
Seven of the programme’s students, from years 4 to 6, have entered in Taranaki’s annual Energy Skills Science Fair on
Friday.
Youth Co-ordinator and Innovator Vince Nuku said exploring the future of energy creation was in step with the programmes
focus on creating innovators, entrepreneurs and design thinkers.
“We were fortunate to have environmental advisor Maria Cashmore as a technical advisor during this process.
“And they came up with a system for converting rubbish and compost into energy and an interstellar option that would see
solar power collected from space.”
Trust kaiarataki Debbie Ngarewa-Packer said the Iwi-designed programme provides a chance for youth to create practical
science solutions for real world problems that could be in production shortly.
Ngarewa-Packer said proud didn’t even begin to cover how the Iwi felt.
“Ngati Ruanui students continue to carve out their own identity in everything they do.
“Now, they have practical science skills that they can evolve to fit whatever career path they choose.
“And more importantly be part of designing future sustainable options for their communities.”
