Student ingenuity on show at NIWA South Auckland ScienceFair
Science
students from around south and east Auckland are putting
their ingenuity and analytical skills on the line at next
week’s annual NIWA South and east Auckland Science and
Technology Fair.
About 120 entries have been
received from almost 200 students representing schools
around the region.
This year the student with the best project will win the premier award of $1000, while the runner up receives $500. There are also a range of categories which carry cash prizes for the winners.
Organiser Catherine Hunter of Mission Heights Junior College said the standard of entries continues to be extremely high.
“Science and technology fairs are all about getting students to think about the world around them and solve real-life problems. The students come up with new ideas and technologies that have real potential to become business enterprises.
“This is a great opportunity to view innovative and interesting ideas from our future scientists.”
Among the projects entered this year include:
• Concussion Conundrum – a device which detects when someone has suffered concussion
• Fluorosensing Waiuku - a device to determine an unknown amount of oil in a water sample, by using extra-virgin olive oil and Berocca tablets
• Tempting Tempering - a project analysing white, milk and dark chocolate forms and their tempering to determine which temperature is best and creates the best taste and appearance.
• What Wrap? – a project to find an alternative to expensive silage wrap
• I Must Emit, I've Bean Curious – a project on the effect radiation can have on the growth on plants. Results showed small amounts of radiation is valuable to the growth of plants.
Judging for the
NIWA South and East Auckland Regional Science and Technology
Fair takes place on Friday and is open to the public on
Monday, August 21 from 3-6.30pm and on Tuesday,
August 22
