Sunny days and frosty nights to end the week - Thursday 3 August 2017
Thursday 3 August 2017
“High pressure predominates over the country today and into the weekend, bringing sunny days and frosty nights for many
regions. Next week, relatively mild temperatures and some wetter weather moves in, as a series of systems affect the
country,” explained MetService Meteorologist Ciaran Doolin.
Showers over the northern North Island ease this evening. However, minor showers continue along the east coast of the
North Island and the Kaikoura coast into Friday, while the rest of the country will see a sunny day. It’s a similar
story on Saturday for much of the country, apart from rain developing on the West Coast in the evening as a front moves
onto the area from the Tasman Sea.
On Sunday, the front continues to move up the South Island, and onto the central North Island from afternoon. Strong
northerlies bring rain to western areas of both Islands on Sunday, with heavy falls on the West Coast. The front
continues to move up the North Island on Monday, weakening as it does, while another front moves onto the far south.
“The heads up for next week is the arrival of a tongue of warmer air which moves into the Tasman with a low pressure
system developing in it on Tuesday,” said Doolin, “This system is likely to bring heavy rain and strong winds to central
areas. However, this far out there is still a degree of uncertainty in the computer models so people are advised to keep
up to date with the latest forecasts”.
