Periods of rain in the north, drier further south for the weekend
“Over the next few days two low pressure systems are set to slide eastwards, delivering periods of rain over the North
Island, while the South Island escapes most of the wet weather,” said MetService meteorologist Stephen Glassey.
The first low moves over the North Island today and early Friday, before a second low spreads across the Island on
Sunday.
Thunderstorms are likely in Auckland and Northland later this afternoon and evening, before the risk reduces on Friday
as the low moves away to the east. However, those armed with raincoats won’t let rain dampen their spirits for today’s
America’s Cup victory parade in the Auckland CBD.
It’s a similar story for rugby fans, as a rain band associated with the second low is likely to affect the deciding
rugby test between the All Blacks and the British and Irish Lions on Saturday night.
“The main rain band looks like it will move across Auckland in the evening. If it’s not raining by the start of the
match, it probably will be by the end of the match,” said Glassey.
South Islanders can expect mostly dry conditions over the next few days, with a continuation of frosty mornings in
inland areas. However, expect some showers at times around the coastal fringes.
Ski-fields looking for snow will be pleased to hear that, while the weekend doesn’t deliver, a cold southerly outbreak
is expected to move over New Zealand around the middle of next week bringing snow to low levels in the south.
