Bishop delighted at $60,000 in funding for young Hutt scientists

National MP Chris Bishop is delighted by today’s announcement of nearly $60,000 in funding for Hutt Valley projects from the 2017 Unlocking Curious Minds contestable fund.

The successful Hutt projects include two programmes from Hutt City Council which focus on inspiring young scientists. The After School Science programme was awarded $29,980 for a hands-on science platform aimed at generating enthusiasm and excitement in children. Funding was also secured for an in-school hands-on programme (awarded $30,000 to engage and inspire the Hutt Valley’s young learners).

“I’m also excited that the Karori Sanctuary Trust was awarded $14,694 to introduce children to the possibility of creating nature-rich suburbs, based on a titipounamu/rifleman translocation from Wainuiomata to Zealandia.

“Previous Hutt projects funded by the Unlocking Curious Minds Fund have been really successful, so I’m looking forward to checking out these projects once up and running.

“I’m a proud advocate for the idea of the Hutt as “Technology Valley”, where we lead in science and innovation. To do that, we need New Zealand’s next generation of scientists excited about the future. This funding is a welcome step in developing our young scientists.

The Unlocking Curious Minds programme is part of the Government’s strategic plan to encourage all New Zealanders to become engaged with science and technology. This year’s successful organisations include primary schools, tertiary education organisations, museums and local businesses.
