Summer’s knocking on the door

There will be some hot spots this week as we head into the meteorological summer which starts on 1 December. There will be plenty of summer rain around though, with a moist northwesterly flow dominating the weather this week.

High pressure secures light winds and plenty of sunshine to start the week, apart from the top of country where it will be fairly showery. “Temperatures in the central and lower North Island are forecast to be very warm for this time of year, with temperatures in Palmerston North perhaps reaching as high as 26C,” said MetService meteorologist Emma Blades.

Warm northwesterlies will bring showers to western and central New Zealand on Tuesday, and rain from Buller to Fiordland, as temperatures start to rise in the south and east of the South Island. “Moist northwest winds strengthen on Wednesday and temperatures are likely to approach 30C in parts of Otago and Canterbury,” Ms Blades commented.

On Thursday a front sweeps up the South Island, continuing the rain in the west and the hot windy conditions in the east. Meanwhile, patchy cloud and a few showers are the theme for the North Island. The front moves onto the North Island on Friday, bringing patchy rain there and leaving a slightly cooler South Island behind.

Further afield, Tropical Cyclone Tuni is maintaining its category one status as it passes to the south of Samoa. Winds close to the centre are estimated to be a sustained 75kph with gales extending 140km from the centre. TC Tuni is likely to stay a category one cyclone as it tracks southeast, possibly approaching Niue around Monday night.
