4,600 Kiwis submit views through Fix Our Future campaign
Youth climate group Generation Zero reeled in more than 4,600 submissions on the Government’s post-2020 climate change
target through their ‘Fix Our Future’ campaign.
An online submission tool at www.fixourfuture.nz allowed people to make a personalised submission by selecting from six key points written by Generation Zero and adding
their own comments.
Submissions were collected over a period of just 18 days, and the group used a range of tactics to engage the public,
including a film, video messages and regular posts on social media, posters, university events and emails to supporters.
Christchurch Generation Zero member Rosalee Jenkin is pleased with the result, and believes the group could have reached
an even greater number of people had more notice been given about the consultation.
“The huge number of submissions and impressive turnouts to the poorly-promoted public meetings has shown how many Kiwis
really care about tackling climate change,” says Ms. Jenkin.
“The whole consultation felt a bit token, rushed and short-sighted, but we hope the Government will prove us wrong and
hear the resounding call for ambitious action.”
“Our aim was to ensure young people had a say on New Zealand’s climate change policy, because it’s our generation that
will pay the cost for inaction.”
“Fixing our future means planning for a thriving, zero carbon New Zealand. This is totally possible, but only if our
leaders pull their heads out of the sand and start thinking long-term.”
