Improving weather leading up to the Easter holidays

Improving weather leading up to the Easter holidays

A showery southwesterly feed of air is set to remain over Aotearoa today, bringing showers into western and southern parts of the country. A frontal system will weaken as it moves up the South Island today, bringing a few showers to northern parts of the Alps in the afternoon and an odd shower to the east of the South Island. On Tuesday, this southwest flow will continue over the country, maintaining some unsettled weather and scattered showers, particularly in the west and south.

"The weather leading up to the Easter holidays looks to be improving, with a broad area of high pressure building across New Zealand during the week," said MetService Meteorologist John Law. "Temperatures will remain relatively mild this week with light to moderate winds across much of the country."

From mid-week the high builds across New Zealand while a low deepens south of the country, leading to strengthening westerly winds and an increased chance of showers over the lower South Island. For Good Friday, weather across the North Island and eastern parts of the South Island is expected to improve with most places staying fine and dry. Meanwhile, a westerly flow will continue to bring scattered showers to the western and southern South Island, especially around Fiordland.

The current forecast for the start of the long weekend contains plenty of fine weather, especially for the east of the country. Cloudier conditions are forecast for the east of the country during the second part of the holiday.
