DOC appoints Chief Science Advisor

Lincoln University Professor of Environmental Management Ken Hughey has been appointed to a new position as Chief Science Advisor for DOC, Director-General Lou Sanson announced today.

Dr Hughey, who is being seconded to the role for three days a week from December, will provide high-level scientific advice to the Director-General and will have a strong focus on improving the science connections across DOC.

He will also connect the department with other scientists throughout the public sector and at universities and other research organisations. Dr Hughey will represent DOC on National Science Challenges and form part of the Natural Resource Sector science advisors group.

“This role will challenge our thinking and continually improve our science standards,” Lou Sanson said. “Dr Hughey will also support us to galvanise DOC’s position as a key player in the science community, demonstrating the enormous value of the science we do at DOC.”

The appointment follows similar roles established at the Ministry for Primary industries, Ministry of Education, and the Ministry for Business, Innovation and Employment.

“The Chief Science Advisor for DOC will underline the importance of evidence-based input into our policy and decision making,” Mr Sanson said.

Dr Hughey brings with him a wealth of expertise and knowledge, particularly in water resources management, the economics of endangered species management and public perceptions of the state of the environment.
