One of the World’s Biggest Suckers Revealed Online
Radio New Zealand’s Our Changing World presenter, Veronika Meduna, will come face to face with one of the world’s
biggest suckers when she hosts an online examination of Te Papa’s newest colossal squid tomorrow morning.
Large colossal squid specimens in good condition are rarely available to scientists and the latest example has created
significant international interest. The scientific examination will take place in Wellington tomorrow and will be live
streamed from 11am.
Apart from her role as a science broadcaster, Veronika Meduna has also contributed to a science column in the New
Zealand Listener and occasionally writes for the New Zealand Geographic and several overseas publications. She says she
is excited by the prospect of hosting the live-stream presentation but concedes much is still to be learned about the
mysterious inhabitant of the Southern Ocean.
“With its rotating, hooked suckers, eyes the size of soccer balls and enormous body size, this is an impressive creature
but most of its biology and life cycle remains a mystery.”
A team of squid experts from Auckland University of Technology will join Te Papa scientists to examine the colossal
squid during the session, while schools and the general public will be encouraged to send in their questions. The event
