te Pa picks up case of awards

Media release

TWO DOUBLE GOLD WINS FOR TE PA AT CHINA WINE & SPIRITS AWARDS

Following a golden reception in the United Kingdom market, and a successful trip to the Asia region in August, te Pā Wines has scooped up a case of awards at the prestigious China Wine & Spirits Awards in Hong Kong.

The latest accolade for the Marlborough heritage brand includes two double gold medals for the 2013 Sauvignon Blanc and the Pinot Gris from the same vintage. The te Pā Pinot Noir was awarded a gold medal in the competition. Bronze medals were given to the Rosé and Sauvignon Blanc OKE.

The awards are the largest and most prestigious wine and spirits competitions in China, with 100 judges blind tasting entries from 35 countries. te Pā’s proprietor Haysley MacDonald and chief winemaker Liam McElhinney say they are delighted with the recent results.

MacDonald says of the brand’s most recent win: “The awards are fiercely competitive because the Chinese market is so important to wine producers already operating in the market and also for those looking to enter the region, so to have our entire range receive medals is a really positive indicator that te Pā will be well received in Asia.

McElhinney says the quality of the fruit and the land shines through in the 2013 vintage: “Our approach is to let the quality of the fruit speak for itself so we try not to intervene too much in the wine-making process, and as a result our 2013 vintage has produced some exceptional wines and flavours that we are proud to bring to the world.”

Earlier this year, te Pā was awarded a gold medal for its 2013 Sauvignon Blanc at the New Zealand Royal Easter Wine Show, and in November last year the same wine was awarded a near perfect score in the Air New Zealand Wine Awards.

In the UK, te Pā is receiving rave reviews from some of the leading wine writers, including a glowing endorsement on the popular Foodepedia website which said “The resulting varietals, which have just arrived in the UK, are surprising for their remarkable individuality.”
