A high to begin the week
A cooler southwest flow has become established over the country, but this will ease during Tuesday as a large high over the Tasman Sea moves across New Zealand. "High pressure rules the beginning of the week so settled weather can be expected across much of the country," commented MetService Meteorologist Peter Little.
A weak front embedded in the southwest flow brushes up the country today, bringing cloud and the odd light shower to the south and east. "This front is about as weak as you can get with many places likely to miss out on a shower," said Little.
As the high moves to the east of New Zealand on Wednesday, a northerly flow becomes established. "The northerly will bring moisture in the form of cloud and drizzle to northern and western places from mid-week," commented Little. However, eastern parts of the country, along with Whanganui and Manawatu, can expect mostly fine weather and warm afternoons. "In the east of the country afternoon temperatures should peak in the high teens or early twentieson Wednesday and Thursday this week," added Little.
Towards the end of the week a trough of low pressure approaches from the west. This is expected to bring heavy rain to parts of the West Coast on Friday. "Hokitika's spectacular run of dry weather looks like it is coming to an end later in the week. Just 7mm of rain has fallen there since the middle of August," said Little. Rain is also expected to arrive over many other parts of the country on Friday, though only patchy falls are expected in the south and east of both islands.
