Media are invited to attend an event to celebrate the new collaboration which will see new marine research and scientific capacity developed in the Pacific region and Conservation International staff based for the first time in New Zealand on the University’s city campus.
This collaboration will link to Conservation International’s existing work in the Federated States of Micronesia, Palau, Marshall Islands, Vanuatu, the Coral Triangle, and the Cook Islands and act as a hub for their offices in Fiji, New Caledonia Papua New Guinea and Samoa. It will also have regional focus on tuna and the Pacific Oceanscape.
Distinguished Professor Jane Harding and CI's Pacific Island and New Zealand Executive Director Sue Miller Taei will speak at the event, which also features a performance by the Te Vaka music group. Cook Islands PM, Henry Puna will travel to New Zealand to provide a regional voice of support for this partnership and to highlight ties of this new research with the Pacific Oceanscape and the Cook Islands Marine Park.
The new partnership between the University and Conservation International comes on the eve of the Third International Conference for Small Island Developing States to be held in Samoa in early September. The theme of this Conference will be on sustainable development through genuine and durable partnerships.
