Science Galore with ‘Defying Gravity’, Science Roadshow And Robotics at MOTAT
Start your School Holidays with science and gravity defying fun at MOTAT!
From 5 – 20 July, MOTAT’s latest School Holiday Experience, ‘Defying Gravity’, explores the four basic principles of flight- weight, lift, drag and thrust and gives visitors the ability to create their own gravity defying, flying machines. The Science Roadshow will also be at MOTAT all school holidays.
Visitors will learn the physics of gravitational forces in a way that triggers their imagination and interest by completing four fun and learning filled activities which include ‘Fantastic Flying Machine’, ‘Drop-Copter’, ‘Mini Parachute’ and ‘Strawket’.
‘Drop-Copter’ lets you build and decorate your very own copter, then test how well it spins. If you were to build your own ‘Mini Parachute’- how long would yours stay in the air? Also you can build your very own ‘Strawket’; or straw rocket; see if you can make yours Blast Off! In ‘Fantastic Flying Machine’ you can design and build your very own machine using supplied materials then test it in the MOTAT wind tunnel to see how much lift you can achieve and how well it will defy gravity.
Each activity area will teach visitors about a different principle and each one gets a stamp in your Aeronaut training book. When all four principles have been learnt you can enter the competition to win a ‘Defying Gravity’ prize pack full of fantastic flying machines.
Visit the popular Science Roadshow to experience the hands on science fun each day between 10am and 5pm. Live demonstrations will be held every hour with two great shows available, Up, Down, All Around ; looking at gases and Am I Living?; which looks at the MRS GREN method to determine if something is living or non-living. Plus, watch out for an appearance by Bobo the Gorilla!
MOTAT’s new SPARK-LAB Workshops ($30 per child, bookings essential), are also available from 10.00 to 13.00 on 15, 16, 17 July. Developed to promote hands-on, minds-on tinkering activities, the 3 hour workshops will let children aged 8+ to experiment with basic robotics and programming using Arduino Robotics and Mindkits.
With ‘Defying Gravity’ and 60+ Science Roadshow exhibits and a live demonstration every hour, MOTAT is packed full of fun for kids these school holidays
