Lab Technologists and Innovators in for some Kudos

Nominations open this week for the 7th Kudos Science Excellence Awards. The annual awards recognise outstanding science achievement from the Waikato region, and for the rst time will extend its categories to include Lab Technologists and Innovators at the prestigious awards to be held later in the year.

Waikato scientists are among the best in the World, contributing to groundbreaking research such as Professor Peter Molan who was commended for the way that his research work, collaborations and publications have gained medical recognition for the antibacterial properties of Manuka honey. As a direct result, Manuka honey is now used in hospitals in several countries around the world, including Australia, Canada, England, Hong Kong and America.

“The Hamilton Science Awards Trust are committed to acknowledging science achievement from our regions’ world class scientists”, says Chair of the Trust, Bob Simcock. This automatically extends to those who tirelessly work behind the scenes, taking samples, testing and analysing to form part of the innovative discoveries we see everyday, he says.

The Innovation award recognises an innovation or breakthrough based on underpinning scientic research, extending the awards to a wider audience.

Agricultural, Medical and Environmental awards are again included in this years category lineup, with the distinguished Lifetime achievement award and highly sort after Secondary Science Teacher/Educator and Communicator award.
