A relatively quiet weekend

The quiet theme to the weather will remain in place for the time being, as weak fronts slide across the country ahead of an anticyclone that will build across the South Island by this weekend.

MetService Media and Communications Meteorologist Daniel Corbett commented,"Fairly decent weather is expected in many places over the next several days, but raincoats may be needed in some places this weekend."

An easterly flow is expected to bring some wet weather across northern and eastern parts of the North Island this weekend. Over the remainder of the country, the anticyclone will help bring mainly fine and dry weather, with some spells of morning cloud.

Tropical Cyclone Mike, now well south of the southern Cook Islands, is expected to turn into a large extra tropical low in the next day or so well east of New Zealand. It may bring stronger winds to the Chatham Islands later in the weekend, while surfers and boaties in northern and eastern parts of the country will notice an increase in the easterly swells.

The weather for Otago's Anniversary Day long weekend is looking dry, with northeast winds bringing areas of cloud from time to time, especially about the Peninsula and the coast.
