A fine weekend but the tropics visit next week
The cool and breezy weather that has moved up the country will gradually fade away as the weekend begins.
MetService Media and Communications Meteorologist Daniel Corbett commented,"This will be a decent weekend for outdoor plans with good fine spells, but a bit of wet weather will creep into the far south for the second half of the weekend."
The wet weather moving in across southern parts of the South Island during Sunday will come from another front moving up the country. It could briefly bring a few heavy bursts of rain to the far southwest along with strengthening winds across the alpine ridge tops.
The front will weaken as it moves north on late Sunday into Monday which should keep the weather mostly fine and dry for those celebrating an Anniversary Day on Monday.
A visitor from the tropics.
A tropical low, currently near the Solomon Islands, will gradually drift south into the North Tasman Sea this weekend. This tropical feature has a high expectation of becoming a cyclone later on Friday. It could strengthen slightly this weekend as it passes just west of New Caledonia, and will mostly likely weaken and decay as it moves across the cooler waters to the north of New Zealand by early next week. This significant extra-tropical system could then be poised to bring an elevated risk of heavy rain and strong winds to the North Island. As confidence increases, MetService will issue any necessary watches or warnings for areas at risk.
