Disruptive Enterprise IaaS Cloud Technologies - Catalyst IT Seminar Nov. 19
A half day introduction to and overview of several critical disruptive technologies that you will need to understand in
2014: OpenStack, Ceph, Samba 4 and Puppet.

Public-Private Cloud, right-sized for NZ
OpenStack is free open source software delivering a massively scalable and flexible cloud computing platform. The project was
originally founded by NASA and RackSpace and is the fastest growing open source project in history. More than 150
companies have joined the project so far and OpenStack is likely to become the de-facto standard platform for building
private and public clouds.
Cost Effective Distributed Storage
Ceph is an open source software-based storage solution that runs on a cluster of commodity servers. The system is designed
to be completely distributed, without a single point of failure, scalable to the exabyte level and to be both
self-healing and self-managing. The data is seamlessly replicated, making it fault tolerant. It is designed to present
object, block and file storage from a single solution, simplifying the storage stack, decreasing the administration
overhead and drastically reducing storage costs.
Configuration Management and Automation
Puppet is IT automation software that helps system administrators manage infrastructure throughout its lifecycle, from
provisioning and configuration to orchestration and reporting. Using Puppet, you can easily automate repetitive tasks,
quickly deploy critical applications, and proactively manage change, scaling from 10s of servers to 1000s, on-premise or
in the cloud.
Windows Interoperability
Samba 4 is an open source software solution that allows interoperability between Microsoft and non-Microsoft hosts. It can be
used as an Active Directory Domain controller, as a Windows file and print server or to allow non-Windows environments
(eg: Linux) to join a Microsoft network and interact with Windows clients and servers.

Alan will share his understanding and experience with the introduction of utility computing into enterprise
environments.
Alan Perkins is an internationally recognised Cloud Computing visionary and pioneer. He was named amongst the top twenty
“People to Watch [in Australian Technology] in 2012 by The Australian and is currently Rackspace Chief Technology
Officer, Asia Pacific region.

1:30 - 2:10 "OpenStack live demo" by Doug Thompson
Released on 4th April 2013, OpenStack Grizzly (2013.1) is the latest stable version of OpenStack. This is a product tour
where you will see some of the new features in Grizzly and how easy it is to provision and manage your infrastructure
resources (virtual servers, storage and networks) with OpenStack.
Doug Thompson is an infrastructure solutions consultant at Catalyst IT, passionate about open source, automation and
cloud computing. He has been helping many of New Zealand's largest IT departments manage and design their mission
critical infrastructure for longer than he cares to admit.
2:20 - 3:00 "Ceph distributed storage" by David Clarke
Ceph is a unified storage platform, capable of serving object, file and block storage and designed to scale massively
while providing high-availability and high-performance. It is challenging the storage industry in the same way that
OpenStack is challenging the cloud industry. Ceph storage can be consumed by applications using its native APIs, or
gateway APIs that emulate OpenStack, Amazon S3 or Rackspace clouds.
David will introduce you to Ceph, highlight some of its features, describe how it works under the hood and explain how
it can be consumed by OpenStack or your applications.
David Clarke is a solutions architect at Catalyst IT with many years of hands on experience with critical architectures,
common components used by cloud solutions. He has been involved with Ceph since 2012 when Catalyst began its research
and development work with open source cloud computing and storage technologies.

3:20 - 4:00 "Samba 4 as a replacement to Active Directory" by Andrew Bartlett
Samba 4.0 is a major release of the Samba file, print and authentication server. With the 4.0 release, it can now be an
Active Directory domain controller, either alone, with other Samba DCs or while participating as a peer domain
controller in existing Windows Active Directory Domains. In this presentation Andrew Bartlett will describe the new
features available in Samba 4.0 and what lies ahead in the Samba roadmap.
Andrew Bartlett is a software engineer and Samba core developer. He is an active member of the Samba team, particularly
focused in the area of integrated authentication. He is the primary maintainer of the AD Server as well as Samba's
authentication layers generally.
4:10 - 4:50 "I'm inherently lazy, you can be too." by Patrick Brennan
Puppet is a flexible, customizable framework available under the Apache 2.0 license designed to help system
administrators automate the many repetitive tasks they regularly perform. As a declarative, model-based approach to IT
automation, it lets you define the desired state - or the “what” - of your infrastructure using the Puppet configuration
language. Once these configurations are deployed, Puppet automatically installs the necessary packages and starts the
related services, and then regularly enforces the desired state. In automating the mundane, Puppet frees you to work on
more challenging projects with higher business impact. Puppet runs on all major Linux distributions, major Unix
platforms like Solaris, HP-UX, and AIX, and Microsoft Windows.

public sector, telcos and major airlines.
