ScienceTeller Festival dates announced for 2013
ScienceTeller – the popular biennial international festival celebrating science and storytelling is back and will be
held in Dunedin from 25-27 October.
Featuring a programme of internationally renowned and high profile guests, the second festival, hosted by the Centre for
Science Communication at the University of Otago, combines science and storytelling during three days of inspiring and
engaging events. Some workshops are exclusively open to delegates only.
Delegate registrations will be available online from mid July at www.scienceteller.com with a full programme announced in mid August.
Festival Director Phil Bishop says ScienceTeller 2013 will build on the success of the first festival held in 2011 –
with something for everyone.
“This year is going to be truly exciting, with a mixture of national and international events that tell stories about
science in original, entertaining and thought-provoking ways.
“There are 16 events on offer – including a variety of stimulating films, exhibitions, talks and workshops – that we
hope will motivate people to think critically, demand evidence and keep an open mind.”
Highlights of this year’s festival include Canadian rapper Baba Brinkman with his hugely entertaining show ‘The Rap
Guide to Evolution’, and the much anticipated graduate film premiere.
“The world premiere of films at Dunedin’s Regent Theatre and produced by the 2013 graduating class from the University
of Otago’s Centre for Science Communication is always popular. This year’s films are split over two sessions – between
4-6pm and 8-10pm, with time for a dinner break in between.”
Festival events will be open to everyone, attracting people from all walks of life, including established or budding
scientists, writers, artists, students, teachers, parents and children.
The biennial festival is generously supported by a number of sponsors – including founding sponsor, the University of
Otago, in partnership with NHNZ and Otago Museum, and a number of other sponsors, funding partners and volunteers.
Without their support this festival would not be possible.
Other high profile guests and events are yet to be announced.
ScienceTeller was established in 2011 by the Centre for Science Communication at the University of Otago. The festival
is unique in that it combines storytelling and science.
The festival programme includes 16 events designed to attract a wide variety of audiences, providing teachers with tools
to take back to the classroom and inspiring the public to engage in science related topics. The festival celebrates
storytelling, using filmmaking, writing and other creative media.
The festival offers a delegate registration for those who wish to have access to all screenings, workshops, exhibitions
and talks. Some workshops are exclusively open to delegates only.
