Environment Commissioner welcomes Government announcement on endangered eels
The Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment Dr Jan Wright is welcoming the Government’s announcement on longfin eels today.
Moves to help the endangered native species include the convening of an independent peer review panel to assess the data on the species, and the development of a protection plan by the Department of Conservation.
Dr Wright says the announcement is very pleasing.
“I want to thank Ministers for progressing the concerns raised in my report so promptly. Urgent action is required if we are to save this unique and endangered New Zealand species.
“I will be watching further developments with interest, including the outcomes of the independent review panel.”
Dr Wright’s report, On a pathway to extinction? An investigation into the status and management of the longfin eel, is available here.
