Talk explores pesty science
Victoria University will host a free public lecture exploring the science behind pest animal management on Thursday 21
March.
The lecture, titled Pesty Science: Is a Predator-Free NZ a reasonable reality or impossible dream? will be presented by Andrea Byrom, Portfolio Leader at Landcare Research, who will discuss a realistic vision for 2050, and
remind us to keep important outcomes such as biodiversity, international branding and reputation at the heart of the
debate.
Dr Byrom is passionate about the role research can play in shedding light on what will inevitably be a heated debate, as
New Zealanders grapple with a significant long-term issue—the impact of predators on our native biodiversity.
“Regardless of your personal position in the Predator-Free NZ debate, the background science will play a crucial part,”
says Dr Byrom.
In her role at Landcare Research, Dr Byrom leads research on weeds, pests and diseases, with her own work focusing on
understanding the ecology of pest animals—particularly ferrets, stoats and rodents.
