Space Rocks! at Carter

It’s all about meteorites, comets and asteroids at Carter this summer. Carter Observatory offers some great family fun over these school holidays.

Over the holidays there will be plenty of activities to keep the whole family occupied including two gallery trails. For younger children, there is a “journey through the asteroid belt” challenge where children will need to cross off the asteroids and find the path to safety. For older children there will be a trail based on Holst’s planet suite called ‘Space Rocks!’ Small prizes will be given out for completed trails.

Our “Catch a falling star” competition will run throughout the holidays, and children will be asked to create an original invention to catch a meteor out of the sky. The best entry will win a prize. We are looking for original and inventive designs that are neat!

Between 7 and 25 January interactive drop-in workshops will run on weekdays (except public holidays) between 10:30am – 12:30pm and 2pm – 4pm. Kids can create their very own asteroids and comets on our craft table, have fun in a matching game all about space rocks and add to our collective asteroid belt by potato and foam printing their own.

Of course, the new planetarium show, "We are Aliens!" will be showing throughout the period also. Planetarium shows will run hourly throughout the holiday period so there’s plenty of opportunity to catch any one of the many shows on offer. Summer late night openings until 10pm on Tuesdays and Saturdays give visitors the additional opportunity of some telescope viewing through the historic Thomas Cooke telescope as the weather permits.

On Monday 21 January Carter Observatory will be offering Wellington residents half price entry to celebrate Wellington Anniversary Day. This is a great opportunity for locals to have a look through Carter and to get some inspiration for the year ahead! Just show your proof of residence to redeem this offer.
