The Scientist and the Avatar
The guest this week In Conversation with Noel Cheer on Triangle Television is Professor Ganesan Venkataraman, one of
India’s most prestigious scientists. A Fellow of the Indian Academy of Science, he has attracted many honours and has
published extensively in physics – including quantum physics -- at both the ‘learned’ and the ‘popular’ level.
He has also applied his enormous learning to his country’s religious traditions and is a devotee of the guru, Sri Sathya
Sai Baba, regarded by his followers as an avatar, or manifestation, of the Hindu god Krishna.
Prof. Venkataraman’s study of the Hindu sacred scripture, the Ramayana, suggests to him where our understanding of the
structure of reality is taking us. He thinks that ancient perceptions can inform leading edge western quantum physics
which itself can be seen as a radical departure from everyday intuitive Newtonian physics.
Furthermore he looks forward to a world enriched by “Politics with principles, education with character, science with
humanity, and commerce with morality.”
