Defence Technology Agency and Industrial Research to collaborate on research and development
The Defence Technology Agency and Industrial Research Limited (IRL) today signed a Memorandum of Collaboration (MoC) to
work closely on developing new technologies to benefit New Zealand – now and in the future.
The Defence Technology Agency (DTA), part of the New Zealand Defence Force, plays an active role in capability
development and in the delivery and employment of Defence Force capabilities to secure and protect New Zealand.
Chief of Defence Force Lieutenant General Rhys Jones said the MoC would allow the DTA and IRL to identify and work on
areas of mutual interest and work towards shared common goals. More specifically for the NZDF, it would provide a
partner which had the resources, capability, research programme goals and technology roadmaps that would support the DTA
role in developing innovative technology to enable it to secure New Zealand.
IRL Chief Executive Shaun Coffey welcomed the more formalised relationship between IRL and the Defence Forces, through
the DTA.
“IRL looks forward to building on its already fruitful relationship with the NZ Defence Force, and this new agreement
allows enhanced focus on innovations and applications of the country’s most exciting technology. It will enable us to
work with the DTA in the areas of navigation, communications, robotics, data capture and even health technology.”
IRL and the DTA will also look at R projects in networks, sensor and human systems, and applied vehicle systems.
