Celebrate Matariki at Carter

Kicking off this year’s Matariki celebrations, Carter Observatory and Capital E are hosting a Matariki-themed family fun day complete with crafts, storytelling and star prizes!

Celebrate the Māori New Year under the stars on Sunday 17 June, in a special day just for families. Children can have their faces painted into a starry sky, enjoy a story from the entertaining duo Just Giraffe, and create navigation-themed crafts like a garden sundial or mini paper-waka for sailing the seven seas.

Carter will also be holding a very special Matariki evening on Wednesday 20 June, featuring a special Matariki themed planetarium show followed by a tour through our galleries with Ben Ngaia. Ben hails from Taranaki Whanui ki Te Upoko o Te Ika and has an amazing insight into our exhibition from the perspective of tangata whenua. We think you’re really going to enjoy this evening. We’re running a 7pm and 8pm showtime for this special evening.

Throughout the Matariki period, 14 June to 15 July, Carter will have Matariki themed planetarium shows, children’s competition and gallery trails on offer.

On weekdays throughout the school holidays there will be drop-in workshops where kids can enjoy making Matariki related arts and crafts. These drop-in workshops will run between 10.30am-12.30pm and 2pm-4pm weekdays 2 through to 13 July. Normal admission applies
