Physiome -- the scientific view of "life as a whole"
Physiome -- the scientific view of "life as a
whole"
For some
centuries, scientists have been investigating the human body
as though it were a collection of machine-like components.
While it has been profitable to proceed one organ at a
time, it has been thought for at least 20 years that there
is much to be gained by taking a more intergrated view of
the body, to see it as a hierarchy of functionality from the
very low level of "genome" to the highest level called
"physiome". In that word we are to hear the concept of "life
as a whole".
New Zealand has several scientists pursuing this approach and one, particularly, does so on a world scale, alternating his attentions between New Zealand and Britain.
This week's
