Physiome -- the scientific view of "life as a whole"
For some centuries, scientists have been investigating the human body as though it were a collection of machine-like
components. While it has been profitable to proceed one organ at a time, it has been thought for at least 20 years that
there is much to be gained by taking a more intergrated view of the body, to see it as a hierarchy of functionality from
the very low level of "genome" to the highest level called "physiome". In that word we are to hear the concept of "life
as a whole".
New Zealand has several scientists pursuing this approach and one, particularly, does so on a world scale, alternating
his attentions between New Zealand and Britain.
This week's guest In Conversation with Noel Cheer on Triangle Television is Professor Peter Hunter who is currently both
Director of the Bioengineeering Institute at the University of Auckland and Director of Computational Physiology at
Oxford University in England.
