Debate
over oil and gas exploration moves to the EDS Coastlines
conference in just over 3 weeks time
Recent controversy over the seismic survey being undertaken by Petrobas off East Cape has highlighted concerns about lack of consultation with local iwi and adequate environmental controls over offshore petroleum activities. This issue will come under close scrutiny at the forthcoming conference. Speakers on this topic include:
* John Pfahlert, the Executive Officer for the Petroleum Exploration and Production Association, who will give an overview of the development of the offshore petroleum industry in New Zealand * Dr Alison MacDiarmid, a senior marine ecologist at NIWA, who will describe from a scientific perspective what risks offshore exploration and mining activity pose for the marine environment * Helen Atkins, Partner of Atkins Holm Joseph Majurey who will describe the findings of a recent comparative review of the regulation of offshore petroleum operations including New Zealand * Professor Barry Barton, who is based at the Faculty of Law at the University of Waikato, who will critique the adequacy of the current legal framework.
The presentations will be
followed by an open panel discussion where concerns and
issues can be canvassed and the shape of future regulation
discussed. What should prove to be a very stimulating and
thought-provoking session will be chaired by Bronwen Golder,
Director of the Kermadecs Initiative, Pew Environment
Group.
