Toyota welcomes official US all-clear on accelerator electronics

Toyota New Zealand says owners of New Zealand’s most popular and trusted motor vehicle brand can continue to rely on their vehicles’ electronic accelerator control systems after an official US investigation found no flaws in the electronics which could cause unintended acceleration.

The findings of the unprecedented 10-month study ordered by the US Congress, and carried out by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and NASA scientists, were released today.

Paul Carroll, General Manager of After Sales for Toyota New Zealand, says the company is pleased the findings reinforce its original view that Toyota’s electronic accelerator systems were not the cause of unintended acceleration cases which had been reported in the US.

“The crucial outcome of today’s verdict is that our customers can retain total confidence in their vehicle. It was an intensive and thorough study by the foremost US experts, and the findings are unequivocal.”

Mr Carroll said Toyota is planning to progressively install a brake override feature in new vehicles which will automatically counteract instances of unintended acceleration.
