Wind energy’s attractiveness proven again
Wind energy’s attractiveness proven again
“Mt Stuart, a new wind farm in the Clutha District, reinforces that wind energy is a viable and cost-effective source of electricity,” says Fraser Clark, Chief Executive of the New Zealand Wind Energy Association.
Today Pioneer Generation announced that it will build the 7.65MW Mt Stuart wind farm near Milton. The wind farm should be generating electricity by December 2011.
“Five companies are now building wind farms across the country, and several other companies are progressing potential projects. This activity involves both major power companies and independents like Pioneer Generation. It demonstrates the depth and wide range of interest in wind energy,” says Mr Clark.
“We now have over $250 million being invested in new wind farms. This investment is being made without any form of government subsidies or support, which is a unique global achievement.”
The Te Uku and Te Rere Hau wind farms are under construction in the North Island. The Mt Stuart, Mahinerangi and Lulworth wind farms are being built in the South Island. These projects have a combined capacity of 157MW.
These new projects will increase New Zealand’s installed wind capacity by 25%. Wind energy already supplies 4% of New Zealand’s electricity.
“Mt Stuart will complement Pioneer Generation’s existing renewable generation. At the same time it will provide a local and low cost source of electricity,” concludes Mr Clark.
