Science Festival opening tempts taste buds!
New Zealand International Science Festival begins - Dunedin, 6-11 July 2010
The seventh New Zealand International Science Festival, to be held in Dunedin from 6-11 July is already tempting taste buds with the festival team receiving early bookings for events.  Themed ‘Everyday Science: Food for thought’, the festival will feature over 200 stimulating and fun experiences to open up the world of science to everyone.
An official opening event will take place this evening at TECHnique Restaurant, Otago Polytechnic followed by a blind tasting with Julie Woods ‘that blind woman’. The event will welcome visiting and local experts and thank external event organisers, volunteers, local and national sponsors and funding partners.
Festival Director Sue Clarke says “the festival team has worked hard to offer a whole host of amazing experiences this year. Our aim is to give the public quite literally a taste of science, with a focus on aspects from our everyday lives.”
Highlights of the festival include appearances by visiting experts including Tim Jarvis AM, a British environmental scientist; Tom McFadden, a biologist and ‘science rapper’ from Stanford, USA; Mr Andrew Greensmith, a Melbourne-based plastic and craniofacial surgeon; NZ chef and author Julie Biuso and Julie Woods (aka ‘that blind woman’) in a ‘dining in the dark experience’; and an Australian science educator and performer, Chris Krishna Pillay, with his live cabaret show at the Fortune Theatre, Dante’s Laboratory – the Science of Sin.
The festival will culminate in a ‘Fun & Food Fiesta’, on Sunday, 11 July from 10am to 3pm at the Lion Foundation Arena, Edgar Stadium, Dunedin. This event is brought to you by Cadbury, the Dunedin City Council and New Zealand International Science Festival. It will be a fabulous, action-packed indoor day of fun, food and discovery and include something for everyone.
Tickets to all events are on sale now and bookings are advised. Tickets can be purchased online at www.scifest.org.nz or by phoning 0800 SCIFEST (0800 724 3378); visit the ODT Festival Headquarters in Wall Street or the i-SITE Visitor Centre in Princes Street, Dunedin.
