New doggie DNA test available in NZ
They’ve been called mutts, mongrels, bitsers and ‘SPCA specials’…but now mixed-breed dogs can hold their slightly unusual heads high.
A new DNA test, which can trace a dog’s breeding back to their great grandparents, is now available in New Zealand.
New Zealand online pet store, www.petpost.co.nz, is now selling the BITSA™ Breed Identification test to dog-owners around the country.
“For people who have a mixed breed dog, it can be really fascinating to learn more about their background,” says Petpost’s Marketing Manager, Libby Merchant.
“By identifying some of the breeds in their genetic make-up, the BITSATM test can help explain their behaviour and personality…like why he’s always digging up the garden, or whether she’s likely to be good with kids.”
The DNA test, which is administered by Genetic Technologies Ltd in Australia, can currently identify about 80% of dog breeds. The test results can identify the dog’s primary breeds (parent), secondary (grandparent) and distant (great grandparent); although this will depend on the individual dog’s history.
The BITSA™ test is safe and non-invasive to administer. After purchasing a BITSA™ kit, the owner simply takes a swab of saliva from their dog’s cheek and posts it back to the lab. The results, complete with report and an individual ‘doggy passport’, are sent back within approximately two weeks.
“The report includes a breakdown of the breeds identified, behavioural traits and physical characteristics, and any potential health issues for those breeds. You also get suggestions on activities and games that suit your dog.”
