Up close with bacteria
Secondary students at UCOL’s Science Open Day had an up-close experience with bacteria research today.
UCOL National Diploma in Science Lecturer and bacterial researcher Dr Paul Demchick says the students were able to take turns using UCOL’s spectrophotometers to measure the growth of bacteria.
The eighteen Year 12 students from Palmerston North Girls’ High School and Feilding High school also tested the bacteria’s growth when different chemicals and toxins were added to their environment.
As part of the day, showing what a career in science could lead to, they were taken on tours of three working laboratories in Palmerston North; the Central Environmental Laboratories, Fonterra, and Crop and Food Research Ltd.
UCOL offers a two year National Diploma in Science, training students for work in research laboratories.
