Aquaculture Industry benefits from science funding round

Aquaculture research and development took a step forward yesterday with the Foundation of Research Science and Technology announcing their latest funding of projects.

It was pleasing a number of prominent aquaculture research and development projects were successful with the funding spread across the organisations that have a commitment to aquaculture," said Mike Burrell Aquaculture New Zealand CEO.

NIWA and the Cawthron Institute featured with their successful bids focusing on the continued development of current and new species as viable aquaculture ventures.

Crop and Food Research is focused on the harvesting, handling and processing systems to maintain and improve the quality and yield of seafood and the development of novel high value products, an imperative if the industry is to remain competitive over the long term.

In all the successful bids will contribute approximately $32 Million over 4-5 years into the continuing development of New Zealand's fastest growing primary industry.

"The successful agencies are to be congratulated by the industry not only for their funding awards but also for their continued commitment to research and development to further the success of New Zealand aquaculture," said Mr Burrell.
