Information To Give Kiwi Families More Power

More Energy Efficiency Information To Give Kiwi Families The Power To Choose

Kiwi families wanting to do their bit to save energy, look after their health, and save money at the same time, will benefit from a new information campaign by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA), starting today.

The information campaign is the latest initiative in the ENERGYWISETM package designed to improve the energy efficiency of our homes.

"The campaign will give New Zealanders the information they need to make smarter energy choices," said EECA Chief Executive Mike Underhill.

"We know from recent research that 63% of New Zealanders are doing some things to help look after the environment and would like to do more. People want clear, specific information on actions they can take to help them live more sustainably.

"The ENERGYWISETM information campaign shows that, by making a few simple choices around the way we use energy, how we insulate and heat our homes, and the products we buy, we all have the power to save energy and make a difference to our own health and to the environment."

Other ENERGYWISETM initiatives include:

* Continuing to install insulation and energy efficiency measures in pre-1978 houses, occupied by people on low incomes - one of the most vulnerable groups in terms of health. To date 40,000 homes have been completed, with at least 12,000 more to be added each year.

* A 55% subsidy for insulation and other energy efficiency measures for rental properties occupied by low-income tenants living in properties built before 1978.

* Improving the performance of appliances through Minimum Energy Performance Standards to stop the worst energy guzzling products getting into the country and Energy Rating Labels and the ENERGY STAR(r) mark to give consumers the information they need to make better choices.

* A new programme expanding the financial assistance for insulation and energy efficient heating to middle-income New Zealanders, due to be launched shortly.

* A Home Energy Rating programme which will make the energy efficiency of a home easily visible and measurable for the first time.

* Financial support for the installation of solar water heating.

The ENERGYWISETM campaign includes information on www.energywise.govt.nz , a series of action sheets offering practical advice, involvement in the new series of The Ultimate Mitre 10 Dream Home, and television, press and web-based advertising. An example of one action sheet is attached.

The Ultimate Mitre 10 Dream Home airs on Monday 4 February, 7.30pm TV2
