InternetNZ welcomes anti-spam law Media Release September 5, 2007
InternetNZ (Internet Society of New Zealand Inc) welcomes the Unsolicited Electronic Messages Act 2007, which came into effect today.
Executive director Keith Davidson says the law brings New Zealand law into line with anti-spam legislation globally. It will enable cooperation between the enforement agency within the Department of Internal Affairs and its international counterparts.
"New Zealand is one of the last OECD countries to legislate against spam and can now hold its head high in the global fight," says Davidson.
"As well as preventing local spam, the law will prevent New Zealand becoming a haven for international spammers. It has been modeled on Australian law that has been very successful in reducing Australian spam."
InternetNZ has updated the anti-spam website stopspam.org.nz, which provides a central resource for consumers about spam and how to deal with it.
