SilverStripe accepted for Google Summer of Code 2007
20 March 2007
We are pleased to announce that SilverStripe is the first New Zealand organisation ever to be accepted into Google Summer of Code.
This year Google will spend US$4,000,000 for 800 of the world's brightest programming students to gain experience working with established open source organisations. Each student will receive US$4,500 to work on a project.
"I feel SilverStripe is a great example of a well-constructed open source project. It makes innovative use of technology but it is easy to use, which is just as important for open source, so it is a good candidate for Google to support. With so much going on in the webdevelopment arena, it will be easy for Summer of Code developers to contribute, and with the mentors having helped students in the past, we were happy to trust SilverStripe to be the first New Zealand organisation involved." Chris DiBona, Open Source Programs Manager, Google Inc.
Summer of Code projects for SilverStripe may involve adding Google Maps support, improving overall usability, and integrating Flickr, YouTube, and WordPress . Work done during Summer of Code will become part of the standard free distribution of SilverStripe.
SilverStripe believes our involvement in Summer of Code will encourage more people to adopt and enhance SilverStripe at an international level. SilverStripe has received a significant amount of interest from qualified candidates from many countries across the globe. Applications closed 24 March.
SilverStripe are the primary developers of the open source SilverStripe CMS/framework, written in PHP/MySQL. It has been downloaded thousands of times, and is used by many New Zealand businesses and government agencies to run their websites.
