.nz Registrations Hit 250,000 Milestone

InternetNZ through the
Office of the Domain Name Commissioner is pleased to
announce that the number of registrations of domain names
under the .nz top level domain reached 250,000 late
yesterday, showing continued strong growth in the internet
space in New Zealand.
It was in September 2005 that registrations reached 200,000, having previously reached 150,000 in April 2004.
Domain Name Commissioner Debbie Monahan says the growth in domain names is a result of a robust competitive market involving over 60 authorised registrars offering .nz names to businesses and the public.
"We anticipate continued growth in both the number of domain names and in the number of registrars involved in the market. This shows the strength of the competitive market model for domain names, backing onto an independent and impartial registry service."
Background:
The Office of the Domain Name Commissioner is an operational office of InternetNZ (The Internet Society of New Zealand), the not-for-profit organisation responsible for the .nz name space. InternetNZ also participates in advocacy and policy for the Internet community and is held in high regard in international circles, having proven to be a superb example of a public/private partnership in action.
