Picnic Weather For Weekend And Waitangi Day

Picnic Weather For Weekend And Waitangi Day

MetService meteorologists are forecasting a cool wind change on Friday will lead in generally fine and warm weather for the long Waitangi Day weekend.

"It'll be good for picnics," said MetService Weather Ambassador, Bob McDavitt. "Sunny and dry are the main words in the weekend forecast, but there will also be some minor exceptions. The cold front bringing the southerly change on Friday has the potential to trigger off a few intense thunderstorms over Southland and coastal parts of Otago and Canterbury."

McDavitt added that this southerly change could bring a few showers to Wellington during the IRB Rugby Sevens on Friday but these should fade away on Saturday.

"People in northern areas who have been finding it hard to sleep this week with the humid warm nights will be able to welcome some cooler nights as the southwest wind reaches them this weekend."

Waitangi Day brings perfect picnic weather to most of the nation as a large anticyclone moves slowly over central parts of the country with warm dry weather. In the far north there may be a few afternoon showers. In the far south a strengthening northwest flow is forecast and this may bring some heavy rain to the Fiordland mountains.
