NASA engineer to give free public lecture

NASA engineer, Jack Bacon, will give a free public lecture at the Christchurch Town Hall on Monday, 8 August.

The Canterbury branch of The Institution of Professional Engineers (IPENZ) has sponsored the free lecture, the only one of its kind in the country.

Dr Bacon, a pre-eminent engineer, speaker and futurist who consults and works at NASA on the construction and operation of the international space station, will speak to two sessions for primary and secondary school students, earlier in the day. The public lecture starts at 7pm, with the doors opening an hour earlier. On Tuesday Dr Bacon is speaking at the University of Canterbury.

IPENZ spokesman, Steve Abley says all ages are welcome to attend the lecture when Dr Bacon will talk about technologies, such as the conquest of space, nanotechnology and fusion, and their impact on the future.

"It is extremely exciting to have a speaker of Jack Bacon's calibre come to Christchurch," Mr Abley says.

"We are sure that Christchurch residents will be enthralled by what Dr Bacon tells them. IPENZ are confident that the event will help raise the profile of engineering."

Christchurch Mayor, Garry Moore, agrees with Mr Abley's sentiments.

"This shows once again the initiative that exists in our city. To get someone of Dr Bacon's stature to speak exclusively to Christchurch audiences, is a coup," he says.
