PRESS RELEASE
Thanks on behalf of the Kiwi
“There are many people – individuals and groups – that should be thanked for their efforts on behalf of the Kiwi,” said Greg Blunden, Convenor of the NZ Kiwi Foundation at their Annual General Meeting held recently at Aroha Island Kerikeri.
“Laurence Gordon has done a sterling job in setting up and operating Kiwi Projects in both Russell and Purerua,” he said. “He has also helped phenomenally with Kiwi counts each year – as has Lindsay Alexander in Russell."
“Wendy Sporle and Lindsay Charman, also have made tremendous efforts – not only with kiwi counts but in establishing new areas which are already seeing a resurgence in birdlife and bush regrowth."
The key work of the Trust is in obtaining funding for work on the ground – making dollars go as far as possible.
Greg mentioned the work of Russell Thomas, the Treasurer of the Trust since its inception in 1999.
“The list is huge,” he said, “and I’m sure that if Kiwi had wings they would be applauding the work of our committee, members, and trappers and the landowners we work with."
He also made mention of bodies such as the ASB Trust, Scottronic Technologies (Kerikeri), and Enterprise Russell as well as the Northland Regional Council for helping the Trust with funding over the years.
