Record science award entries

Record science award entries

A last minute delivery of 40 entries from Massey University has created a record 127 entries for this year’s MacDiamid Young Scientists of the Year Awards, which recognise achievement and excellence in the science sector.

The 40 entries from Massey’s Palmerston North campus is the biggest number to have been submitted by one institution to the annual awards event since it began in the late 1990s. Massey’s Technical Manager, Bob Parsons, decided to hop in his car and personally deliver the big bundle of Massey posters to MacDiarmid Awards Events Manager, Tracey Lewis, to meet the deadline. (Friday April 22). Ms Lewis says the overall presentation standards are significantly higher than in past years.

“The quality exceeds all previous years and entrants have obviously worked hard to display and explain their scientific work in the poster style required for next month’s judging,” she says.

The Awards, named after Nobel Prize winning New Zealand scientist Professor Alan MacDiarmid, recognise the work of New Zealand’s top up and coming scientists and researchers, who can submit a poster highlighting their work in one of nine award categories. The winners will be announced at a Gala Dinner in Auckland in June.
