Toyota takes overall honours in EnergyWise Rally 2004

The Toyota team celebrates

The Toyota Prius hybrid of Chris Amon and Sarah Burke has taken outright victory in EnergyWise Rally 2004 with the remarkable fuel consumption figure of 4.02L / 100km (70.3 mpg). Second place overall was a dead heat between the similar car of Brian Cowan and Rachael Tucker (Miss Earth NZ), and the Daihatsu Charade of Jacqui Madelin and Naomi Wiggins.

Finishing in Auckland last night after 1619 kilometres of challenging driving conditions around the North Island, the event produced extremely close results in a number of classes.

The EnergyWise Driver Award, which was presented to the driver team which improved on their car’s official comsumption figure by the greatest percentage, was a dead heat between The Shaun Summerfield / Craig Allan Honda Accord Euro and the Mazda6 of Gavin Shaw and Roger Russell.

The small car class was won by the Madelin / Wiggins Charade from the Honda Jazz manual of Neil Johns and Alan Strong, with the Honda Jazz automatic of Paul Berridge and Stewart Park coming in third. The compact car class was another hybrid benefit, with the Honda Civic hybrids of Grant Aitken and Elli Bloomfield (Miss Earth NZ runner-up) and Rob and Sue Maetzig finishing first and second. Third was the Honda Civic sedan of John McMillan and Mike Stephens, which won the award for the best conventional petrol car in this class.

In the medium / executive car class the Priuses came in first and second, with the Summerfield / Allan Honda Accord Euro taking out the conventional petrol car prize. Allan Dick and Keri Ashton-Reid won the large / luxury car class in their Mercedes-Benz S320 TDi, with the second-placed Honda Accord V6 of Glenn and Helen Johnstone receiving the award for the best petrol car.

Medium lifestyle / leisure vehicles was won by Sean and Ray Willmot in the Honda Odyssey from the Honda CR-V of Jocelyn and Ken Watkin and the Hyundai Tucson of Quentin Drain and Mark Harrison. The Hyundai Terracan diesel of Richard Edwards and Helen Erikson won the large lifestyle / Leisure vehicles class from Trevor Hudson and Jim Stewart’s Volkswagen Touareg 2.5 diesel, with the Ford Territory of Richard Bosselman and David Linklater taking the prize for the best petrol vehicle.

One of the surprises of the event was the performance of the commercial vans, which produced remarkably low consumption figures despite carrying a 500kg payload. The Mercedes-Benz Vito of Jon Addison and Sandy Myhre won this class from the Volkswagen Transporter T5 of Philip West and Peter Freestone.

A highlight of the event was the participation of Olympic Gold Medallists Barbara Kendall and Hamish Carter, who shared the driving of a Hyundai Getz running on a 10% ethanol / petrol blend.
