Aoteaora Maori Internet Organisation

Aotearoa Maori Internet Organisation AMIO have sent letters to many high and low profile Maori organisations who use .com and various .nz addresses.

The letter promotes the existence and the use of .maori.nz the world first indigenous 2LD. It is hoped that Maori organisations will start making the move to the more suitable domain name .maori.nz which presently has low numbers of registrations.

Although the public vote for .maori.nz was a landslide win with 1490 votes in favour (91.7% success) for the creation of .maori.nz the number of registrations has been minimal with only 310 registered names to date which is a slight decrease from recent months. These low numbers are despite the fact that there has been an increase in M ori web sites in recent years.

AMIO Chairperson Karaitiana Taiuru said the reason for the high numbers in the .maori.nz vote and the low number of registrations for .maori.nz has occurred for two reasons.

The first reason is the organisation that campaigned for the creation of .maori.nz "New Zealand Maori Internet Society" is now defunct leaving many people with an uneasy feeling that .maori.nz will also soon be defunct (this is one motivating factor that the key campaigners established AMIO) and the second reason is that since the successful vote there has been very little promoting of the domain.
