Feedback Sought On Maori Land On Line (Mlol)
The Maori Land Court is seeking feedback on its proposals to make current Maori Land information available on its website.
"Maori Land On Line or MLOL" is a programme designed to give website users the ability to look at current Maori land blocks, search for current Maori land owners and check for block management information.
Project Manager Marae Tukere says Maori Land On Line has been purposely built to restrict users to current information only.
"In previous hui held throughout the country Maori have said they do not want whakapapa available on the internet," Ms Tukere said. “Therefore there is no access to historical records which contain the majority of whakapapa information.”
Since 1995 the Maori Land Court has been modernising its core functions - moving from a predominantly paper-based system to electronic processing of applications and enquiries. The Maori Land Information System was introduced to the court in 1999 and includes a database of all Maori land title and ownership information. Ms Tukere says Maori Land On Line is a read only link to duplicate data taken from that database.
"With Maori Land On Line, there is a great potential to provide this information to more Maori, both here and overseas," Ms Tukere said.
"From your own home you would be able to print current lists of owners, names of trustees and reports detailing activities on blocks," she said.
The decision to activate Maori Land On Line will depend largely on feedback collected over the next two months.
Demonstrations are scheduled in most town centres commencing in February through to April. Demonstrations will start at 9.00am and 10.00am and will run continuously throughout scheduled days.
