Symantec Virus Warning W32.Mimail.A@mm


Symantec Security Response rating: Level 3 - moderate

Symantec Security Response is currently analyzing a new worm, W32.Mimail.A@mm, which spreads via email. The email appears to be sent from the network administrator. The email will have the following characteristics and will include this message:

“Subject: your account %s

“Message: Hello there, I would like to inform you about important information regarding your email address. This email address will be expiring. Please read attachment for details.

“Best regards, Administrator

“Attachment: message.zip.”

The Mimail worm attempts to exploit a vulnerability in Internet Explorer that allows a script to execute in the Local computer. The worm creates a mass-mailing of itself, which may clog mail servers or degrade network performance.

At this time, Symantec has received 125 total submissions of the worm. Symantec has currently rated the worm at a Virus Threat Level of 3.

Symantec Security Response strongly encourages enterprises and consumers to update their virus definitions and apply the latest Microsoft patches.
