Intel Celebrates 35 Years Of Innovation

Week of Worldwide Employee Celebrations Kicks Off Around the World

Intel today celebrates its 35th anniversary, reflecting on the many ways its microprocessor technology has had a major impact on our world.

Founded in 1968 by Robert Noyce, Gordon Moore and Andy Grove, Intel has grown to 78,000 employees operating in more than 40 countries worldwide. Intel opened its first international manufacturing facility in 1972, an assembly plant in Malaysia, and subsequently expanded into the Philippines in 1974. Since then, Intel’s operations in Asia Pacific have grown to more than 17,000 employees across 14 countries. Asia Pacific continues to grow in importance for Intel from its assembly and test manufacturing facilities to research and development centres in India and PRC and through Intel’s strategic investment arm, Intel Capital, which has invested over USD$ 600 million in more than 100 companies across Asia Pacific. In addition, for the financial year ending in 2002, Asia Pacific contributed more to Intel’s revenues than any other region globally.

Thirty-five years ago, the hottest high-tech items on the market were clunky electronic calculators. At that time, there were only 30,000 computers in the world, most of which occupied entire rooms and required refrigeration.

In July 2002, Gartner Dataquest issued a report stating that more than one billion PCs have shipped since the debut of the first commercially successful and widely available personal computer, the 1974 Altair, powered by the Intel® 8080 chip . While it took about a quarter century for the computer industry to reach the one billion milestone , it will take only six more years to reach two billion PCs worldwide, with the most growth expected from emerging markets in Asia Pacific.

In the 1960’s, a “fast” computer took hours to execute one programs which today’s Intel processors can complete in less than a second.
